CAMPING CAMPING CAMPING CAMPING AND MORE..

MQTlogoa Joe Todd reporting from Jekyll Island Campground … (A Few Thoughts On Camping)

Linda and I spent about one week at this campground the first part of May (tent site 16). Excellent Campground and we had all sunshine with temps ranging from 65 degrees a night to 85 degrees during the day….

This was our home away from home. We have had this Eureka tent for over thirty years. It has seen a lot of use (North South East West) and it is still going strong… Thanks Eureka

“The place which you have selected for your camp, though never so rough and grim, begins at once to have its attractions, and becomes a very centre of civilization to you: “Home is home, be it never so homely.” – Henry David Thoreau….. Linda tells me I’ll be cooking breakfast in the morning.

“How hard to realize that every camp of men or beast has this glorious starry firmament for a roof!  In such places standing alone on the mountain-top it is easy to realize that whatever special nests we make - leaves and moss like the marmots and birds, or tents or piled stone - we all dwell in a house of one room - the world with the firmament for its roof - and are sailing the celestial spaces without leaving any track.”  ~John Muir …. Linda says, “That is all well and good but where is breakfast?”

Camping tip #1… If you are camping for any length of time and using a Coleman/Propane Stove get a 10 gallon propane tank. I used to get so tired of carrying and then disposing of the individual tanks

pptank If you look closely you can just make out the top of my 10 gallon tank. ( Just trying to be a little easier on the environment)

Even in a time of elephantine vanity and greed, one never has to look far to see the campfires of gentle people.  ~Garrison Keillor

FAV1 I even did the dishes when I got a

120px-RoundTuit Ok one more camping tip. That would be tip #2… Did you notice the size of the Eureka Tent? Well, when one gets a little older one might have to make a couple trips to the bathroom during the night and the bathroom might be a little distant from your camp. So……

DSC_0002a The Luggable Loo fit nicely in the corner of the tent and saved a lot of steps….

Linda and I say, “ thanks for stopping by and stay tuned for more on Jekyll Island.”

“Pitch your tent, park your RV or camper under the magnificent oaks on the northern tip of Jekyll Island! Located opposite the Clam Creek Picnic Area, you are near by Driftwood Beach, the fishing pier and fascinating historic ruins.” READ MORE

DSC_0006A ALERT: In case anyone is considering doing some camping this spring or summer, please note the following public service announcement: In Alaska, tourists are warned to wear tiny bells on their clothing when hiking in bear country. The bells warn away MOST bears. Tourists are also cautioned to watch the ground on the trail, paying particular attention to bear droppings to be alert for the presence of Grizzly Bears. One can tell a Grizzly dropping because it has tiny bells in it. (sorry)

Thought For Today:: We ourselves feel that what we are doing is just a drop in the ocean. But the ocean would be less because of that missing drop. Mother Teresa

Cinco de Mayo—or the fifth of May—commemorates the Mexican army’s 1862 victory over France at the Battle of Puebla during the Franco-Mexican War (1861-1867). A relatively minor holiday in Mexico, in the United States Cinco de Mayo has evolved into a celebration of Mexican culture and heritage, particularly in areas with large Mexican-American populations. Cinco de Mayo traditions include parades, mariachi music performances and street festivals in cities and towns across Mexico and the United States. READ MORE

“SINKO DE MAYO” THE UNTOLD STORY:::::::::

Hellmans

Each Year On May 5th

Most people don't know that back in 1912, Hellmann's Mayonnaise was Manufactured in England.  In fact,The Titanic was carrying 10,000 jars of the condiment scheduled for delivery in Vera Cruz, Mexico, which was to be the next port of call for the great ship after its stop in New York.  This would have been the largest single shipment of mayonnaise ever delivered to Mexico ...  But as we know, the great ship did not make it to New York.  The ship hit an iceberg and sank.

titanic

The people of Mexico, who were crazy about mayonnaise, and were eagerly awaiting its delivery, were disconsolate at the loss.  Their anguish was so great, that they declared a National Day of Mourning. The National Day of Mourning occurs each year on May 5 and is known,of course, as - Sinko De Mayo.

Continental Army Encampment at Yorktown Victory Center

“The life of a Revolutionary War soldier is vividly portrayed in a re-created Continental Army encampment. Historical interpreters describe and depict daily routines of American soldiers during the last year of the war, with demonstrations of military drills, musket and artillery firing, 18th-century surgical and medical practices, and the role of the quartermaster in managing troop supplies.” READ MORE

“SOME writers have so confounded society with government, as to leave little or no distinction between them; whereas they are not only different, but have different origins. Society is produced by our wants, and government by our wickedness; the former promotes our happiness POSITIVELY by uniting our affections, the latter NEGATIVELY by restraining our vices. The one encourages intercourse, the other creates distinctions. The first is a patron, the last a punisher.” “Common Sense” by Thomas Paine

“When Washington assumed command, the Continental Army truly was not even an army. Rather, it was a loosely and poorly coordinated band of militias and citizen-soldiers under control of the individual states.” READ MORE

F.Y.I.::: As many as 150,000 men fought as part of the Continental Army over the course of the Revolutionary War. However, there were never nearly that many serving at the same time. The largest the army was at one time was around 17,000 soldiers.

Medicine and Disease: During the Revolutionary War more soldiers died from disease than from combat. Soldiers had a poor diet, worn out clothes, damp shelters, and lived in unsanitary conditions. Diseases such as smallpox and typhus killed thousands of soldiers.

OK::::::: ONE BAD JOKE::::::::::

What is the difference between George Washington, Richard Nixon, and your mother-in-law?
Washington couldn't tell a lie, Nixon couldn't tell the truth and your mother-in-law doesn't know the difference.

How old were the soldiers? The soldiers were of all ages from young boys to old men. The majority of the soldiers, however, were ages 18-24.

This is how the cooking was done::: How do you like that oven/cook stove…  The diet of a Continental soldier during the winter of 1776 was made up of allotted rations that consisted mainly of salt meats like beef and pork, along with bread or biscuits. Check out the Victory Center on Pinterest

An upcoming post we will do a walkabout a The 1780s Virginia farm ..

At the re-created site, which includes a dwelling, separate kitchen, tobacco barn, crop field and fenced garden, historical interpreters demonstrate the seasonal cycle of work that characterized lower- to middle-class farm life in southeastern Virginia.”
