Walkabout The Adena Estate of Thomas Worthington

MQTlogoa  “Adena was the 2000-acre estate of Thomas Worthington (1773-1827), sixth governor of Ohio and one of the state's first United States Senators. The mansion house, completed in 1806-1807, has been restored to look much as it did when the Worthington family lived there, including many original Worthington family furnishings.” Read More

Adena/Adina:: Means "delicate, gentle" in Hebrew.

DSC_0010 I didn’t walkabout all the 300 remaining acres of the original
homeplace but I did check out the five outbuildings and formal gardens. The gardens have undergone major renovation.

This magnificent mansion was built back in 1806-1807.

When this mansion was built Ohio was really wilderness and dense forest.

“A GENTLEMAN’S GARDEN ON THE FRONTIER
"On one side of the house is a terrace with flowers and vegetables. This garden was arranged by German gardeners, who keep it in very good order,” -- Karl Bernhard, Duke of Saxe Weimar Eisenach, on his 1826 visit to Adena

DSC_0152 “A bank barn or banked barn is a style of barn noted for its accessibility, at ground level, on two separate levels. Often built into the side of a hill, or bank, both the upper and the lower floors area could be accessed from ground level, one area at the top of the hill and the other at the bottom.”

DSC_0150 “ The springhouse at Adena was built by George McCormick and Conrad Christman in 1805, at a cost of $46.34. The current springhouse is a reproduction.

As I was leaving the estate but still on the access road this is what I saw.

DSC_0198 I have no explanation for the camel.. I posted this photo on my Facebook page and people thought I had been sniffing glue when I said, “I saw this camel in someone's backyard.” (We are talking Ohio after all).. I may have to go back to Adena to get the “story of the camel.”

jtf1  Hope you enjoyed the post. Adena is a great place for a walkabout.

MQTlogoa You Know You’re from Ohio When...

  • All the festivals across the state are named after a fruit, vegetable, or grain.
  • You install security lights on your house and garage and leave both unlocked.
  • You think of the major four food groups as beef, pork, beer, and Jell-O salad with marshmallows.
  • You carry jumper cables in your car.
  • You know what "cow tipping" or "Possum Kicking" is.
  • You only own 3 spices: salt, pepper, and ketchup.

Women will be Women

MQTlogoa A “Quality Time” Laugh

A woman and a man are involved in a car accident.

car1 It’s a bad one. Both of their cars are totally demolished but amazingly neither of them are hurt.

After they crawl out of their cars,

car2 The woman says, “So you’re a man, that’s interesting. I’m a woman. Wow, just look at our cars! There’s nothing left but fortunately we are unhurt. This must be a sign from God

car3  that we should meet and be friends and live together in peace for the rest of our days.”

The man replied,
“I agree with you completely. This must be a sign from God! “

car3 The woman continued,
“And look at this, here’s another miracle…. My car is completely demolished but this bottle of wine didn’t break.

car4car4

Surely God wants us to drink this wine and celebrate our good fortune.”

Then she hands the bottle to the man. The man shakes his head in agreement, opens it and drinks half the bottle

car5car5  and then hands it back to the woman. The woman takes the bottle, immediately puts the cap back on, and hands it back to the man.

car6

The man asks, “Aren’t you having any?”
The woman replies, “No. I think I’ll just wait for the police”

The Great Seal Of The State Of Ohio…

MQTlogoa “Quality Time” thought for today:: “Govern a great nation as you would cook a small fish. Do not overdo it.” Lao Tzu.. “But Do It” Joe Todd

gs

“According to historical lore, the seal was based on the eastern view from Adena, the home of Thomas Worthington near Chillicothe. Worthington was one of Ohio's first two United States senators and he served as the sixth governor of the state.”  As we walk along passing through the grove.”

DSC_0134 The seal illustrates Ohio's diverse geography. In the background stands Mount Logan in Ross County.
